5 Key Actions for Building Trust

In my last article, the survey results of ‘What Makes a Supervisor Effective?‘ indicated that trust and trustworthiness were the most valued characteristics.  Here is an acronym, describing five key actions, for building trust and commitment.

Thoughts, feelings, values and rationale are shared.

  • Encourage open two-way communication.
    • What you do.
    • How you feel about it.
    • Why you do it.
  • Listen, listen, listen.

Roles, responsibilities, risks, and rewards are communicated.

  • Roles define acceptable behavior.
  • Responsibilities are defined in relation to roles.
  • Hold yourself and others accountable for their actions.
  • Risks/Rewards need to be balanced and defined.

Use constructive feedback.

  • Focus on the situation, not the person.
  • Describe behavior and observations in objective, factual terms.
  • Share your reactions to observations.
  • Ask the other person to share their perspective.
  • Clarify facts; listen to understand.
  • Ask for a change in behavior.
  • Offer help and show support

Support and lead by example.

  • Actions speak louder than words; walk your talk.
  • Support and encourage employees/coworkers.
  • Allow for mistakes, freedom to fail.
  • Support without removing responsibility.

Truth, honesty and integrity.

  • Keep promises and commitments.
  • Admit mistakes; explain the resolution and plans for prevention.
  • Give people the benefit of doubt, until a pattern of behavior says otherwise.
  • Discourage assumptions and rumor.
  • Make moral and ethical decisions.
